How Does a Co-op Work?

So by now you should know what a co-op is, and you may now be wondering how exactly they work.

To the left you'll find links to food, labor, rates, application process, and more. All of the nitty gritty details that you need to know about before you move in.

food!Food!
This is probably the best part about living in a College Houses co-op. There is no need to go shopping because your co-op receives weekly shipments of food.

Since you and your housemates pool money together (included in rent) and order your food in bulk, everyone saves more money and has access to a wide vareity of food.

There are 17 meals per week served including a vegetarian option every day. Most co-ops distribute these meals by having breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Friday along with two additional meals on the weekend.

If your schedule won't allow you to attend dinner, you can always sign up for a "save plate" which will be waiting for you in the fridge until you get home. Or, you can go into the kitchen day or night and make any kind of meal your heart desires

Grounds WorkLabor
Labor is what keeps the place going. Every member is required to perform four hours of labor per week (Opsis: two hours). Most houses divide their labor up into these categories: kitchen, maitenance, and grounds. Whatever is done at your home is done at the co-op.

Since you and your housemates divide duties, you only perform your labor a couple of times a week instead of doing it yourself every day when you live alone. You put in some labor, but it's less than if you lived by yourself and had to cook and clean everything all the time.

cooking!Kitchen labor includes cooking, cleaning, dishes, and stocking the fridgerator/freezer. The kitchen normally requires the most amount of labor hours since it serves to provide 17 meals a week and also must be kept up to health code standards.

Maintenance labor aims to cover preventive, planned, and emergency maintenance.

constructionGrounds labor can be cutting grass, trimming trees, maintaining plants, cleaning up trash, recycling, and more.

What will your labor be and how is it decided? Once you move in, you and your housemates will sign up for temporary labor. After your house officer in charge of labor reviews everyone's schedule, you will receive permanent labor that you perform for the rest of the semester.

I think that living in a co-op provides many advantages that an apartment would not. Being a member of Halstead would give me the opportunity to meet many other college women, have a say in how the house is run, and be part of a community.
