What is a cooperative?

A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned an democratically controlled enterprise.

A cooperative is a business controlled by the people who use it. It is a democratic organization whose earnings and assets belong to its members. By patronizing and becoming an active member of a co-op, you invest yourself with the power to shape that business. You control the politics and economics of what is truly your organization.

In a housing cooperative (or co-op), a housing development is jointly operated by its members. They own membership certificates in the corporation, giving them the right to occupy a dwelling unit and participate in the operations of the corporation. The cooperative housing corporation owns the total property. A not-for-profit corporation.

Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others.

Democracy
Each house is run democratically by the members who live there. Decisions are made at house meetings where each member has an equal voice. All members are encouraged to attend because these meetings directly affect their living situation. Each year, the members elect officers from among themselves to serve as the house leadership. These officers are charged with coordinating food, membership, maintenance, social activities and the general welfare of the house. House committees provide the direction. Each house also elects representatives to the College Houses Board of Directors. The board is responsible for all decisions at the corporate level.

Open Membership
We offer membership to all college students in the Austin area. Our membership includes people from all walks of life and from around the world. If you like diverse communities, come see us. Your application will be reviewed by the house you choose and if they select you, you're in!

Limited Return on Investment
We budget pretty conservatively; which is why we can offer good housing at affordable prices. Each house has it own budget and the membership works to stay within it. Our profit, or margin, is reinvested in the buildings or saved for the future. Your dollars stay at College Houses for the present and future co-opers.

Education
As a student organization, we try to provide facilities that support your efforts to get a good education. We have computer rooms, study rooms/areas, quiet hours and events that will meet the needs of our diverse membership. There is a College Houses newspaper and some houses have their own publications such as the Taosian or the 21st Street Co-opulator.

Time Out
Barbecue, swimming pool, cool back yards, pool and ping pong, TV, high level vistas (roof deck). These are just a few of the diversions available. You can also enjoy camp outs, trips to Central Texas landmarks, and an inter-house baseball league.

I think that living in a co-op provides many advantages that an apartment would not. Being a member of Halstead would give me the opportunity to meet many other college women, have a say in how the house is run, and be part of a community.
