Houses

College Houses is a housing cooperative which is owned and operated by its student members. The students who choose to live at College Houses live in one of the six "houses" in the West Campus area of the University. Because the houses are managed and operated through the efforts of the members, the houses reflect the values and lifestyles of the people who live together cooperatively.

This concept of management provides for member control of the environment within which they live as well as empowerment to run the cooperative. Even though the individual houses have different characteristics shaped by the membership, there are basic services that all the houses provide. Computer facilities, TV, laundry and cooking facilities are all offered on the premises of each house.

Five of the houses provide a complete meal plan that includes 17 prepared meals each week. We have one apartment house that functions just like any other apartment—you are responsible for your own meals and paying the electric bill.

Each of the six College Houses facilities has a unique appearance, personality and atmosphere because they are governed by the student residents. The best way to gain a feel for each house is to visit the house and have dinner.

I think that living in a co-op provides many advantages that an apartment would not. Being a member of Halstead would give me the opportunity to meet many other college women, have a say in how the house is run, and be part of a community.
